In October 2000, Bunny Oliver traveled to Olancho, Honduras, with a group from St. Martin`s Ev. Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, to help build homes for people in critical need since the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1998. While there, she not only encountered the simplistic beauty of the people and scenery, but was also informed that most of the area`s children do not attend school beyond the sixth grade. Almost all of them have to go to work to help support their families. Although not expensive, the cost of continuing education is beyond the financial means of most families.
To help fund scholarships for the children of Olancho, Oliver is offering oil paintings of the people and sites that have impressed her during her trips to Honduras. All sale proceeds of her Honduras-themed work goes to the scholarship fund sponsored by Austin Helps Honduras, Inc. Posters, prints, and note cards are available for purchase in addition to the paintings. Individual sponsorships of students are also available. To purchase artwork or sponsor a student, contact Oliver by phone at (512)301-4753 or email at boliver80@aol.com
From the first year of the program, over 400 academic and vocational scholarships have been awarded. Twenty-five scholarship students have graduated from high school, with another scheduled to graduate in October 2013. In addition, 17 young people have completed vocational or technical courses.
