HONDURAS SCHOLARSHIPS

 In October 2000, Bunny Oliver traveled to Olancho, Honduras, with a group from St. Martin`s Ev. Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, to help build homes for people in critical need since the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1998. While there, she not only encountered the simplistic beauty of the people and scenery, but was also informed that most of the area`s children do not attend school beyond the sixth grade because the government does not provide free education after that level. Although not expensive, the cost of continuing education is beyond the financial means of most families. 

To help fund scholarships for the children of Olancho, Oliver is offering oil paintings of the people and sites that have impressed her during her trips to Honduras. All sale proceeds from three exhibits sponsored by St. Martin`s Lutheran Church and Austin Helps Honduras, Inc., have gone to the scholarship fund. Posters, prints, and note cards are available for purchase in addition to the paintings. Individual sponsorships of students are also available. From the first year of the program, 200 academic and vocational scholarships have been awarded.  Three scholarship students have graduated from high school, with five more to graduate in 2008.  In addition, 17 young people have completed vocation or technical courses.
